I had the pleasure and privilege of reading Echo Sight as an ARC.
Cian Vera does an excellent job of hooking the reader and keeping their audience engaged with rich worldbuilding and one tantalizing reveal after another of the mysteries surrounding both Enaka and the wider stakes the protagonists are facing. There are characters you'll love and characters you'll want to punch in the face and characters you may feel very complicated about. Enaka and others are beautifully complex, and many a messy decision is made for selfish and selfless reasons alike. This book left me emotionally compromised, and I cannot wait to read the next one!
I was able to read this book as an ARC. This book had me in its hooks from the very first page. Enaka is a very relatable protagonist and they are very funny and sarcastic. Something I definitely relate to. This book very clearly covers several genres and does so wonderfully. Mystery? Check. Fantasy? Check. Sci fi? Check. Romance? Oh yeah! Even with all of this combined into one novel it never feels forced. I personally loved all of the diversity and representation included in that book. And as a certified book lover the map and glossary made my nerdy heart so happy. The ending left me wanting to read more of these characters and I was so excited to see that it is the first book in The Tainted Faculties series. Can't wait to get my hands on the next book!
I had the joy of reading an advance copy of Echo Sight. I went in with very high expectations, all of which were blown away. This was a book I simply could not put down until I'd finished it, and even then I spent weeks wishing an online community already existed to discuss favorite parts, theories, and hopes for the next book.
Echo Sight is extraordinarily well-written with exceptional attention to detail, and invites the reader to engage with the world building and characters to guess the answers to the mysteries and anticipate the plot's twists and turns. Enaka, the protagonist, provides very welcome non-binary representation and it was a joy to read their thoughts and side notes, scattered through the text and footnotes.
If you like urban fantasy and compelling characters racing against the clock to unravel mysteries so they can save a major city and its inhabitants, all while the sins of the past threaten to doom everyone, you will adore this book.
